Call for fiscal data users, enthusiasts and organizers of
#DataRallyOnTheStreets and
#BetterBudget Dataquest for Sustainable Development
Data that is not used is… useless! That is why, in celebration of the upcoming 2023 #OpenDataDay, we have two calls to action upon our stewards, partners and the international community at large:
- For organizers: Make your data use-full! Launch a #DataOnTheStreets Rally or a #Dataquest for Sustainable Development.
- For organizers and users: Learn from the champions! Join our two international showcase events on fiscal data utilization, featuring #DataOnTheStreets Rally and #Dataquest winners from Asia and Latin America.
Make your data use-FULL! Launch a #DataRallyOnTheStreets or a #Dataquest for Sustainable Development
The call is open all year round. We encourage you to launch at most by Sept 2023.
Are you a government agency that publishes budget information in #opendata or a civil society organization that works with #fiscalopendata? Whether you work at the national or local level, GIFT’s user engagement initiatives are for you! Through these initiatives, we aim to encourage civil society organizations (CSOs) and governments to work together to leverage the power of #opendata in the better understanding of how public resources are being spent and contribute to the development of independent and innovative analyses of public #fiscaldata.
The #BetterBudgetDataquest for Sustainable Development is an #opendata expedition, in which the government and CSOs call on an audience with intermediate to advanced knowledge in #datascience, quantitative methods, economics or journalism (or similar) to explore open public spending data and relate it to any additional data and present their findings on the progress of the implementation of budget allocations towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals or #SDGs.
For the Public Infrastructure #DataRallyOnTheStreets, CSOs and governments ask the public to check available information on construction projects datasets or mapping platforms with budget, contracting, and geolocation information, and evaluate a project or a sectoral infrastructure policy (health, education, etc.). Participants monitor public infrastructure projects, through in-person evidence or desk-based data analysis and share their experience through social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, podcast platforms, etc.).
In both initiatives, a panel of jurors from government and CSOs (the GIFT Coordination Team can participate on demand) choose the winners based on creativity, engagement and comprehensiveness of the data analysis.
While these initiatives are great opportunities to build constructive collaboration between governments, particularly Ministries of Finance, civil society organizations, and others to use fiscal open data to analyze public policies, organizers can also provided additional rewards to country winning teams! In addition, GIFT will provide winners with the opportunity to join an awarding ceremony to showcase their work, meet each other, and inspire the world!

Learn from the champions! We hosted two international showcase events on fiscal data utilization featuring #DataRally and #Dataquest winners from Asia and Latin America.
As part of the Open Data Day events, we organized a community get-together on Monday, March 7th 2023!
Since 2017, over 25 events (#Datarallies or #Dataquests) have been held in 13 different parts of the world, each with their own flavor and style, thanks to the commitment and passion of visionary public officials and members of civil society organizations. Nonetheless, the main drivers of these events are, of course, the participants. That’s why this year, we celebrated the winning teams from 2022 initiatives in two (2) online events where we learned from three (3) Asia-based winners: Indonesia, Mongolia and the Philippines, as well from 4 Latin America based teams: Bogotá, Colombia; Chile (national level), Guanajuato State, Mexico; and Mexico (national level).
If you want to organize or participate in upcoming events in 2023, or you are simply an enthusiast of public budgets being used for public good and sustainable development, these events are for you!
